about this blog

The title of this blog is a paraphrase of the fascination I apparently share with Philip Gourevitch, who wrote that

What fascinates me most in existence
is the peculiar necessity of imagining
what is, in fact, real.
-Philip Gourevitch, We Wish to Inform You That Tomorrow We Will Be Killed with Our Families

Major Subjects Discussed: Cambodia, Buddhism, Religion, Religious Studies, Ritual, Labor.

Various versions of this blog have been around since 2004. Although I link to publications, and occasionally publish book reviews of my own here, most of the content on this page is ‘work in progress.’ This blog is a place for me to try out new ideas, and to see if they fly or fall. My mind changes on topics discussed here – precisely because I’m working here. If you want to know my current positions on a subject, it might be easier to just ask me, which you can do on twitter.

I have a job! In that job, I teach some of the same subjects I discuss on this blog! But this page doesn’t represent my employer’s positions, or my manner as a teacher. They haven’t reached out to endorse this page, and I haven’t asked for it.

Your Mileage May Vary. Have a nice day.
