Visakha Puja (Visak Bojia)

Visakha Puja. We celebrated it this last weekend, here in Minnesota. There are some great photos from the trek to Oudong over at KI-Media.

  1. Hey Erik. Nice blog you have here. 🙂 From your linguistic analysic, I assume your Khmer must be really good.

Are you based in Minnesota? I’m attending UofM at Twin Cities this Fall. If you are, that’ll be great.

Tremendous, Mongkol! Yes, I’m based in Saint Paul, one of the Twin Cities. I teach at Macalester College, and have many friends and colleagues at the UofM. Look me up on Macalester’s website and contact me when you roll into town (svakhum!).

  3. That’s awesome. I’ll definitely let you know when I am going. I’ll be doing my Ph. D. in Int’l Education at UofM. I’m very excited and really looking forward to starting.

I’m currently searching for housing. If you don’t mind, please let me know if you’ve got any news about houses or apartments close to the University. Any recommendation on the part of the cities I should look at?

Well, I’m really glad to run into Minnesotan. 🙂 Nice to know you, Erik.

Heya Mongkol – unfortunately, I’m terrible with finding housing, and don’t know much on this score. I will say that depending on your finances and your willingness to commute by public bus for about 20 minutes each way, it can often be much more pleasant to live across the Mississippi River in St. Paul (there are a number of neighborhoods on major bus lines that go straight to the U), and much cheaper. Apartments in the U district are wildly diverse in terms of price (they tend to be more expensive) and quality (many are terrible, some are wonderful!).

    Good luck!
