In Four Years, My Son Could Be Working.

My eldest child, Arun, who was born in Cambodia and whose first language is Khmer, is almost three years old. That means, according to a recent report from the World Bank, that were he ethnically Khmer and still living in Cambodia, he would have about a 1 in 9 chance of beginning to work for a living in four years. That report, which can and should be downloaded from this link, states that about 1.5 children from the ages 7 and up are working in Cambodia, doing everything from selling drinks (and occasionally their bodies) to tourists to using their little hands in brick factories. (( I estimate 1 in 9 on the basis of an estimated 14 million population in Cambodia. ))
