Sacrifice, Social Order, and Vatican II – Nancy Jay

In quote on January 15, 2010 at 1:34 pm

The post-Vatican II Church offers excellent sociological insight into the difficulty of maintaining a sacrificial cult and a sacred hierarchy in an industrialized, democratic, pluralistic world where structures of domination are not organized as descent systems, a world that, especially since the French Revolution, has increasingly lacked social structures that allow sacrificial ideology to be taken for granted. Agrarian feudal society was itself a plausibility structure for sacrificial religion. Life in late twentieth-century industrial cities offers little to support it and much to undermine it.
